Talking About My Planned YouTube Channel

You may have seen a lot of hints about a new YouTube channel from me in the near future. Perhaps you’re wondering when I’ll get around to actually doing this. Well, the truth is that I’ve been working on this project for over a month now, writing scripts, researching equipment and set-ups, and seriously considering what I really want this channel to be about. While the idea started as a way to share my love of video games, after a great deal of contemplation and self-reflection I’ve decided that I want this channel to be so much more than I’d originally thought.

My goals with this new YouTube channel will be to celebrate great storytelling and encourage creativity.

Part of what’s taken me so long in planning the channel is deciding on a tone that I want my content to have. While it’s fun to watch content that makes fun of bad writing and stories (after all, my favorite tv show is Mystery Science Theater 3000) I was worried that spending too much time on the things I don’t like in modern media would only depress me. Besides, I’m not interested in bringing more negativity into the world.

Instead, I’ve decided that my focus will be on creating content that exposes my viewers to a variety of stories and media that have changed my life for the better. I’m not planning to talk about the most popular media out there, because that’s easy for anyone to find. Instead, I’d like to help my viewers find the kind of stories and products that they might never have found if I didn’t feature them. If I do choose to talk about something that’s more popular, then I’ll try to focus on either the personal impact that it had for me, or show some aspect of the subject that my viewers may not have thought about before.

If you want to know specifics about what topics I’ll cover, I’m planning on placing an emphasis on the kind of content that I enjoy. For instance, while movies are a popular thing for YouTubers to critique, I personally feel like they’re overdone, and I’ve never been a huge movie-watcher anyway. My focus will be more on books, games, and other media that have inspired me and fueled my imagination.

Here are just some of the topics I’d like to cover:

Video Games:

  • Conquest of the Longbow: The Adventures of Robin Hood
  • Majesty
  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive
  • Heroes of Might and Magic III
  • Wizardry 8

Books:

  • A Blackbird in Silver
  • Mattemeo
  • The D’Llaurius books of mythology
  • Night Pool
  • Doom Brigade
  • Dragon’s Blood

Board Games:

  • Titan
  • A Touch of Evil
  • Sentinels of the Multiverse
  • Arkham Horror

Movies and Television:

  • The Neverending Story
  • Krull
  • David the Gnome
  • Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
  • Treasure Planet

Toys

  • Z-bots

In addition to these topics, I’m also planning on doing videos designed to encourage creativity in my viewers. While this won’t be a strictly instructional channel, I do hope that I’ll be able to share elements of the craft of writing in a way that is both entertaining and educational.

…and hopefully we’ll have some silly fun, too. After all, it’s my channel. I can do what I what. 😊
